5 TIPS TO MAKING YOUR SMALL SPACE APPEAR AND FEEL LARGER

Photobucket
Nan: How do you like your new apartment?
Dan: I have no room for complaint.

Many people live in smaller spaces for different reasons; whether it's because they can't afford to live in a larger house, a smaller space seem more inviting and practical to them, or they've decided to downsize from a bigger home.  Moving into a smaller space is great, but there's always the challenge of how to decorate without overcrowding.  In a smaller space you want to be able to make the most of the space you have which can be hard when you don’t know where to begin. With the right furniture and the right lighting this all becomes possible!  Knowing tips and tricks about decorating a small space will make all the difference between a spacious or cramped room.

PhotobucketUse Light Colours
1.     Light colors are a good way to brighten up a room and make it appear to be larger. Lighter colors help reflect natural light making it seem bigger and more airy. Using colors to get the most out of your space you can gain the appearance of a larger room.  Different colors are associated with different feelings; colors such as white, cream or beige (natural colors) work great for walls.  Also using inviting and warm colors such a yellow, blue, and green can add the effect of a larger room.

Tip:  Always remember shades when choosing a color. Stick to the lighter or lightest shades if possible in the color. Remember the goal is to reflect light.  Also, try to stick to complimentary colors in the home.

Photobucket
Remove Clutter
2.  We all have it- letters, notes, piles of magazines, loose papers and other things that are just lying around collecting dust.  Get rid of the clutter!  In an already small space the last thing you want to do is add more clutter.  Organization is the key.  Having the ability to hide things is a major plus!  Buy baskets to put your magazine way, and bins and filing units for other papers to decrease the clutter and free some space in your home.  Bookcases, shelves, and centerpieces can also be a great way to save on space and minimize clutter.

Add Height
3.  You always want to draw attention upwards in a smaller space.  Having low ceilings can make an already small space feel smaller.  Adding height to the room gives the appearance of higher ceilings.  A good idea would be to incorporate standing floor lamps, tall plants, wall art, and higher drapes to your space.  These items will shift the attention upwards giving the appearance of an open space.

Tip:Shorter floor to ceiling ratios can be solved by painting the ceiling and the wall the same color, or by keep the wall white.
Photobucket
Use Functional and Modular Pieces
4. Buying modular or multi-functional sofa pieces is always the best way to go in a smaller space.  There are many furniture stores who specifically target apartment/condo sized living so that you can still buy luxurious, comfortable pieces that will fit into your space. Modular sofas like The 'Waterloo(pictured on the right) come in handy for getting them into a smaller spaces and helps increase the space in your home.  Wouldn’t it be great to have a sofa with a hideaway storage unit, or a modular piece that can be designed to meet the needs of your living room but can still be used later on if you decide to move to a larger place?

Use Mirrors
5. Use mirrors – Mirrors really brighten up a room, and are a great fashion piece for any wall.  The bonus of doing this is the reflection of the mirrors gives the illusion of a bigger space.  Mirrors come in many different options and styles ranging from a clutter of smaller mirrors to one big mirror in a large hallway, entrance of your home, or over a sofa.  So not only can you create a decorative piece, but make your room feel bigger at the same time.

THE COLOUR 101: CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR FOR EVERY AREA OF THE HOME

Have you recently decided to paint your home, or redecorate a room? You've started visiting the stores excited to choose the perfect colour only to realize that the possibilities were endless? Frustrated at the idea of what goes where: "Do I want the sky blue or bluebell, lavender or amethyst maybe violet." Who knew there were this many shades of ONE particular colour; even white comes in cream white, off white, opaque and the list goes on.

Colours become easier to choose when you learn that specific colours and shades affect your mood in a particular room, and that there are do's and don'ts in decorating your home depending on the room and its function. A good tip is to bring home paint samples and do paint 'tests' in different areas of the home; this will help you see the colour in its true shade, and get a better feel for how it'd look in the room. A good tip is to look at home décor magazines, blogs or Google pictures of themes and styles you like so you have a better idea of how you'd like to decorate.

LIVING ROOM:
PhotobucketThe living room is the place where you spend most of your time.  It's the place where you relax after a long day in front of the television, spend time with your family and entertain your friends and extended family when they come over. This room is a multifunctional room and gets the most action so your colour scheme is more varied. You don't have to stick to any particular rules in this room of the house.

- Use neutrals like beige, creams, grays, and lighter tones. Pair them with bold accessories to add colour. Changing your accessory colour is easier than repainting; to change your decor simply change your accessory colours.
-Use red to make your wall stand out.  Pair it with brown to tone it down.
-If you have dark colours on the wall like a navy blue, pair it with lighter tones such as white for contrast.
- Don't be afraid of colour, choose colours that pair together well.
-Follow the 60:30:10 Rules -- 60% of one colour, 30% of another colour and 10% of accents.

BATHROOM:
Photobucket
The bathroom is the place where most of your grooming and daily upkeep takes place. You want your bathroom to be a place that is soothing and relaxing, feels large and roomy and provide lots of light. People want their bathroom to feel like an at home spa (at least I do) so why not achieve that 'feeling' easily with colour.

DO:
-Use blue as a top choice in the bathroom. Choose blue in lighter hues, this will automatically create that calming and relaxing feeling.
-Using peach in the bathroom is a bonus for those who love to do all their grooming in this room.  Peach reflects well on the skin and is important if you'll be doing your makeup there, or if you're a man shaving on a regular basis. Lavender is also a really good colour in the bathroom.
-White: This one is a no brainer. White is clean and simple. It is fresh and adaptable, if you think white might be a little too bland on its own dress it up with accents such as towels, and vases, maybe some flowers.
-Use your favourite colour in the bathroom. When you feel good your confidence will be better.
-Maximize the space underneath your sink. Buy a standing shelf or decorative boxes to make storing products and finding things a breeze.

DON’T:
- Use a colour that isn't flattering to you or your body type, or skin tone. This will reflect badly in a room used for grooming.
-Use too many colours in the bathroom.  Since the room is so small it will feel cramped and overcrowded with multiple use of colour.

BEDROOM:
PhotobucketThe bedroom is the place used for ultimate relaxation.  It is where you sleep, relax and watch TV under the blankets after a long day. Many suggest not using your bed for anything other than sleep, even though many of us don't listen to this rule it goes to show the bedroom is a place to relax. The colour you use in there should be ones that are used to reflect such states of relaxation.

DO:
-Use cool colours such a blue, lavender, greens, beige in the bedroom. Be careful when choosing these colours because depending on the shade or undertone it could have the opposite effect.
-Pair two 'cool' colours together to create a colour scheme that use relaxing colors in relaxing rooms.
-Make everything in your bedroom beautiful, if everything around you is beautiful you will also feel beautiful in there.
-If space allows, create a sitting area in your bedroom. If you’re having close friends over and you’re spending time in the bedroom they have a place to sit other than your bed.

DON’T
-Choose loud colours such as red, hot pink, royal blue, or bright sun yellow. This will disturb the flow of the room and instead of feeling calm and relaxed you'll feel fidgeting, angry or irritated.
- Put an office in your room.  It will constantly remind you of work to be done, and take away from relaxation and sleep.

Photobucket
HOME OFFICE:
The office is the place in the home that is used to concentrate, stay organized, and get work done. This is the place where you WORK, nothing else should be done in this room because you want to associate this room with work and concentration.  This is the place to be completely focused so that you can complete the tasks at hand with ease and increase productivity.

DO:
-Use colours such as green and yellow which inspire concentration in an office. Neutral colors like lemons, pastel blues and creams are also good color choices.
--Go with a bright colour over a neutral if you work in advertising, or a job that require creativity.  Bright colours are said to stimulate your mind and appeal to your creative mind.
-Combine a professional space, with the luxury of comfort.  Use a comfortable chair and a good sturdy table.
-Make it inviting.  This is the place where you will have meetings with clients, or other business people. Having adequate seating space maybe a bench or love seat and two chairs would make it look like you're ready for business.
-Try to get as much natural lighting in the room as possible, this tip holds true for every room.

DON'T:
- Mix your home life with your work space. Try to keep them as separate as possible.  Treat it as if your home office is your office away from home.

Example: Don't eat, or watch TV in there do that in your respective room. Matter of fact do not even attempt to put a TV anywhere near your home office.
- Clutter your office. Buy bins, and boxes that go with your colour scheme and label them so you know the contents of the box. Not only will this help keep you organized but it will add a decorative touch to the room as well.
- Use distracting colours. Colours such as red will make you feel irritable in a home office.
- Put your office in a high traffic area of the house.  Try to keep away from noise and any outside distraction.  This will help you keep more concentrated on what you have to do.  If you have a family, work time should be work time. You won't be tempted to check up on the household with every noise you hear.

KITCHEN:
The kitchen is the most important area of the house. It is the place used to cook meals and is a meeting place for families. The kitchen is the heart of the home. Sterilization and cleanliness are at the utmost importance here.

PhotobucketDO:
-Use red in the kitchen to build an appetite. If you don't want to go all out using red, pair it with a neutral colour for the same effect.
- Use white if you're someone who likes to try out different meals and recipes in the kitchen. It is said to help with creativity.
-Keep everything neat and tidy and in its place. Use fun storage ideas that keep everything in sight but not in the way.
-Add an element of comfort to the kitchen, whatever that may be for you. This is the place where your family will gather to talk and eat, and should be inviting to guests as well.

DON’T:
-Use carpet in the kitchen or hard to clean flooring.  The kitchen floor is always getting dirty with spills and food and dirt you want to be able to easily mop or sweep it up. Hard to clean floors will eventually look grimy and unpleasing to the eye; even after a good cleanup.
-Hang anything over the stove; this is a cause for safety concerns.
- Make it harder for yourself to stay organized in the kitchen.  Purchase shelves, racks, and bins for under the cabinets to keep your pots, pans and storage containers organized and easy to reach.
-Avoid Lighting, natural or otherwise.  Light brightens up the whole space and automatically makes it feel warm and inviting.

COLOUR 101: FALL COLOUR TRENDS 2011

Photobucket"texture, contrast and color for fall 2011 – pairing menswear with feminine twists, warm prints with cool metals, incorporating both old and new influences, and creating an intriguing balance between colors."

Fall officially started on September 22nd that first week of fall seemed like Mother Nature was going to skip Fall and head straight to Winter. Thank goodness October is beaming with sunlight, hot weather, and cool breeze. Fall is one of my favourite seasons I call it "Perfect Sweater Weather." You know fall is here when it starts getting darker earlier, the days are warm but nights are chilly and you start thinking about Thanksgiving dinner and Trick or Treating on Halloween. My favourite part of all is the beauty of watching nature change.  The green leaves turning yellow and orange really let me know fall is here.

This is what Pantone had to say about the Fall colours:

“Designers take a painterly approach to fall 2011 by artfully combining bright colors with staple neutrals, reminiscent of how an artist would construct a stunning work of art,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Much like a painter's masterpiece, there is a certain romance to this season's palette.”

With every new seasons that comes new colour trends arrive and you quickly see them popping up in all types industries, from retail to the runway, in home decor, and even architecture. Pantone has the authorize say in reporting what colours will be in style for the season.

OCTOBER'S PICK OF THE MONTH: THE 'NEWPORT'

PhotobucketHey Everyone,
I haven't done a pick of the month for a while but I have a new favourite piece that I am loving right now.

The 'Newport' is a SUPER comfortable lounge chair that is perfect for the den, basement, or if you have space great for the living room or bedroom.  It's the kind of piece you think of getting home too after a long day at work. The cushions feel just right, and with the groove design it almost as if it's hugging your body. Whenever I sit on this chair I feel like I could lay there forever and never get up. It really is THAT comfortable, and our customers feel the same way.
I love the bright colours it comes in; Turquoise, Violet, Storm, and Champagne. These colours really add character to a room, especially one that has minimal colour. It is also available in a standard Black.

The Newport although it may not look like it does - fits two(depending on size of course), so you can cuddle up with your loved one for romantic quiet time, or have a chit chat with a gal pal. Overall I think this is a great piece, and now that it recently went on SALE for $199 making it even more attractive ;)
*we all can agree to loving a great sale*

A MODERN HOMEOWNER'S MUST HAVE: A SOFA BED

Modern homeowners are always looking for ways to keep their place stylish yet avoid clutter. The duality of the sofabed make it the perfect modern homeowners dream.  Whether your sofa bed is being used as your main sofa, in the den, spare room or basement it is a must have for any home! The multifunctionality of the sofabed is what makes it the perfect piece for your home; especially if your space is limited. Sofa beds also come in different styles, sizes and price range so with a little comparison shopping or a sofa bed specialized store you should be able to easily pick out the type of sofa that suits you and your lifestyle.

3 BENEFITS OF OWNING A SOFABED

1. MULTIPLE UTILITY
Photobucket

The sofa bed is the one single accessory that is user friendly, cost effective, durable and comfortable. What other piece is as practical and versatile as a sofa bed? One moment it’s your living room sofa, the next it’s a comfortable bed ready to be slept on. Sofa beds come in multiple different styles and are being designed with smaller spaces in mind.  They are becoming even more functional by providing built in storage units, or easy click clack or pull out draw features. Gone are the days when metal frames use to dominate the sofa bed world.

2. EASILY TRANSFORMS FOR GUESTS
PhotobucketPicture this:  You're having a dinner party where alcohol is being served.  You didn't plan to have people spend the night but one of your guests drank too much and needs a place to cool off over night.  Without a sofa bed, you'd be worrying about the space or lack thereof that you'd have to house this guest. Now, think of how much more convenient it is to not have to worry about sleeping accommodations. Without a second thought you recline the backs of your sofa, pull out the draw, take off the arms, put a fitted sheet and a blanks on and voila......it’s a bed! Your guest can sleep in comfort and wake up the next day feeling refreshed and ready to start the day. A sofa bed doesn't have to be something you use all the time, simply knowing that your sofa is there when you need it gives you peace of mind and a quick backup when guest or family members are coming to spend the night.

3. NOT JUST A SOFA BED....
PhotobucketA sofa bed isn't just for sleeping anymore.  You can now use it for relaxing, a quick nap or sitting back to watch a movie. Since no two sofabeds are a like you can get one that tailors all these needs.  How amazing would be to have the option to use your pull out drawer as a bed function, but also have the option to extend it for use as an ottoman after a long day, or during movie night with friends, family, or a romantic night.  Since you didn't have to go out and buy a lounge chair, bench, or ottoman separately, the sofabed also has cost advantages. It also saved you space you would otherwise be taking up if you had gotten all those pieces separately.

LET US KNOW: "WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT HAVING A SOFABED?"

10 TIPS FOR HANGING WALL ART AND PICTURES LIKE A PRO

PhotobucketBuying art for your home is always a fun experience but can be an art project in itself.   It makes the room more exciting, adds your personality and is a great way to decorate if you aren't allowed to paint the walls.  There are many reasons why people buy art; some are art collectors and always see pieces that they just HAVE to have, others buy a few select pieces to add flair to their home, while some just want to have a whole wall dedicated to art work. Everybody loves art, but most don't take into consideration what’s next after they've bought it and taken it home. Or, if you’re like me you look at pictures on Google, or in home decorating magazines and envy the designer who just arranged a group of art work with such flare leaving you to think, “why couldn’t I think of that” Sadly, if your wall art is not hung correctly it will take away from the room leaving what you thought was beautiful looking a big mess! Whether you purchased high end piece, bought from Modern Sensibility, an arrangement of pictures from Walmart or your local art store, or a simple collection of friends and family we ALL need to know, and should know how to hang our art nicely and professionally

Top 10 Tips For Hanging Wall Art with Confidence and Style.
Maybe we can even get ours to look like the magazines with some practice.

1. Always make an outline or at least have a visual idea of how you’re going to arrange the pictures on the wall.  Your visual can be a brief outline of a straight line arrangement or pictures grouped together with different frame sizes. How you arrange the art is VERY important.  Lay it out on the floor before hanging it up if you have too. The picture you thought was nice in the store could become cringe-worthy simply by how you place it on the wall. (Especially if it’s in a busy area of the home.)
Photobucket2. Remember to choose a focal point in the room where your arrangement can stand out and get the most attention.  If you can do this without taking away from anything else in the room (like your sofa), then that's a bonus. You can achieve this by making sure they are hung symmetrically.

3. Make sure you have hung the art properly and securely.  You do not want nails coming loose and running your walls, or worse the painting falling down and hurting a family member or friend – or yourself!  This is the most important tip I can give.

4. Place your art work in appropriate rooms PLEASE!  I’m sure we all know not to place pictures of food in the bathroom,  or a picture of nude female in your living room (hey, unless that’s what your into) but try to place pictures that are suitable for the use of the room.

Photobucket5. A good idea is to place large wall art above furniture; such as a large piece over the sofa, or the fireplace.  It is also a good idea to hang wall art on a bookshelf, or a hallway display with other accessories such as a vase or a set of candles.

6. If you would like to emphasize the wall that has the art on it you can try subtle lighting, or utilize your natural lighting.  A good idea is to consider the colors of the art itself.  Lighter colors will always make the room appear larger and reflect light.

Photobucket7. Bigger is SOMETIMES better.   I wanted to say always but I shouldn’t generalize because this it might not work the same for everyone.  Having one large painting is good for creating a focal point in any room and will be the first thing a person sees when they walk into that room. This makes for a real standout statement.

8. Horizontally hung painting give the appearance of width to a room, while vertically hung paintings add to the height. This is a great tip to know when deciding on what appearance you’d like to add to the room.

9. Place your arrangement around a mirror or wall clock.  The mirror now becomes a part of the wall art design; adding style and individuality to the arrangement.
Photobucket
10. For a more modern look use a whole wall for your art.  However, you still have to keep in mind the rules, and place like items together.  Don’t start placing items together that have no relevance to each other at all.

So now you’re armed with these ten guidelines, your love for art and an image in your head.

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING A GIVEAWAY

Have you ever wondered how some people have all the luck in winning giveaways and sweepstakes, while the rest of us seem to try but never win a thing! We could call it luck, but hey why leave it up to luck when you can use strategy to increase your chances of winning. What better time than now to learn how to be an expert giveaway winner? Especially when Modern Sensibility is having a HUGE 'Living Room Giveaway"

5 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES TO WIN!
Photobucket
1. Read and understand all the rules of the giveaway.  You don't want to miss out on your chance to win because of a preventable mistake or something you overlooked.

2. Become social media savvy. A lot of contest/giveaways use twitter, facebook and blogging for additional entries into their contest. How easy is it to just blast the information out to your online networks, gaining the upper hand over those who may only have one of the three or none.

3. Try to get as many entries into the giveaway as you can.  If a contest list 4-6 additional entries into the contest try to do as many possible. While others many have done the basics you went the extra mile, hence increasing your chances to win.  Especially the easy ones such as signing up for a blog, or tweeting a message. More entries equal more ways to increase your chances of the randomizer picking your number.
4. Get your friends involved in the contest. If there is a referral system (like ours) you gain entries easily just by spreading the word to your friends.  Invite as many as your closest friends to join the contest and help you become the winner.

5. Last but not least make sure all the information you provided is true, honest and ACCURATE. If you have wrong information you might be disqualified from the contest or worse if you didn't leave the correct information there will be no way for the giveaway host to get in contact with you. If this happens you lose your chance of being the winner, and another person will be picked. Also, check your email often; there is always a time frame on how long a winner has to claim their prize. If you don't check your email you lose your prize.
